    The Process Controls and Instrument Design Engineering team, in the Engineering-Americas organization, provides engineering design and commissioning support for new cryogenic air separation and process gases facilities. We are a regional team who work closely with colleagues in our United Kingdom, India, and China engineering offices. We also provide support to the American Operations team and after sales support team in upgrading/modifying, revalidation and maintaining existing plant assets. Some example projects include hydrogen steam methane reformers, carbon monoxide plants, ammonia plants, and various large-scale equipment installations like pipeline compressors, PSA Units and off-gas processing units. The Process Controls and Instrument Design Engineering team also support air separation plants of varying size and complexity, both greenfield and brownfield installations. Projects typically have budgets exceeding $100 million.

    Manager's Principal responsibilities:

    • Broad responsibility and accountability to manage a world-class Americas based Process Controls and Instrument Design Team of 15+ direct reports with additional supplemental employees and staff contractors
    • Promote safety and diversity consistent with the philosophies of Air Products
    • Accountable for the team's work: Primary activity is engineering of new capital projects starting with the FEED stage and continuing through construction, commissioning and start-up. Other work includes new project bid activities (pre-FEED) and off-line functional development efforts
    • Responsible for recruitment, interviewing, candidate final selections along with on-boarding and training of new employees. Team size expected growth of 20% next year.
    • Accountable for budget, schedule and quality using detailed earned value and real-time project controls metrics
    • Champion cost reductions, competitiveness and global consistency across all engineering stages and product offerings
    • Accountable for quarterly resource planning for all direct reports along with identifying and closing short-term and long-term resourcing gaps
    • Manager will collaborate with Process Controls managers in other engineering centers (outside Americas) and provide potential work sharing opportunities for direct reports across all regions
    • Manager and direct reports must collaborate with multi-functional engineering disciplines across sales, engineering, purchasing, and manufacturing on a wide variety of projects with varying technical complexity and scope
    • Strong focus on growing and developing direct report's careers while at the same time motivating, leading, and inspiring
    • Responsible for all aspects of team's performance development, individual career planning and end of year performance evaluations
    • Anticipated travel 30%: International travel for global process control management activities, domestic travel for onsite project oversight and vendor relationships along with tactical travel to support the broader engineering community

    Responsibilities of the Control and Instrumentation Design team:

    • All engineering stages (PRE-FEED, FEED, detailed engineering and design, and field)
    • Contribute to P&ID development, Hazard and Operability reviews and 30%, 60% and 90% model reviews
    • Specification of process control equipment including control valves, relief valves, flow measurement devices, process instrumentation, specification and configuration of control and analytical systems including DCS, PLC, SCADA and Analyzer systems
    • Rigorous alignment to relevant specifications, standards and work processes for all controls and instrumentation designs specified and produced by Air Products or Air Product's Engineering Partner
    • The team's role will further include proposal estimating, planning of project process control activities and the reporting and forecasting performance
    • Support plant commissioning and start-up activities

    Requirements:

    • A bachelor's degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering with at least 20 years of applicable work experience
    • Experience as a manager of Process Controls engineers engaged in new capital project design.
    • Experience with Smart-Plant Instrumentation software suite
    • Experience developing control applications and hardware specifications with global process automation vendors; Siemens PCS7 preferred
    • Cryogenic air separation and flammable gas plant experience preferred
    • Must be familiar with EPC engineering organizational structures, the function of each discipline and how they interact
    • Critical to be able to communicate across multiple time zones with multiple cultures on complex technical issues
